Marine Corps Air Station New River N.C. --  Marines and sailors stationed aboard Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune or Marine Corps Air Station who commit severe traffic offenses off base, which lead to license suspension or revocation, are required to report their offense to their command and the traffic court aboard their respective installation.

Severe violations include excessive speeding, driving while impaired and reckless driving.

“Service members are required to report their citation within two days of committing the offense,” said Sgt. Carl Urbina, traffic court liaison with the base Provost Marshal Office and New York City, New York, native. “After notifying their command, we issue a court date. In the event a Marine can’t make the court date, they can call the traffic court to reschedule.”

According to Marine Corps Installations East Marine Corps Base Order 5560.2, failure to appear at traffic court leads to a mandatory six month revocation of base driving privileges. Depending the severity of the traffic violation, the base traffic court may require a service member to remove their vehicle base decal or attend remedial driver training until their driving privileges have been returned.

“If service members can’t drive off base, they can’t drive on base,” said Joyce Johnson, traffic court office automation clerk and Detroit, Michigan, native. “We want to keep everyone safe, and we provide that safety through the rules and regulations.”

Staff noncommissioned officers and officers have the ability to file a third party traffic complaint or citation. Officers and staff noncommissioned officers can inform a service member’s command if they witness a traffic violation or dangerous driving. If an officer or SNCO sees a violation on base, they are able to initiate administrative action, where the driver will then receive a citation.

The base traffic court holds hearings from 8 a.m. to noon, Monday through Thursday and reinstatements are held from 1 to 3 p.m.
