Sergeant Major Roger F. Griffith graduated from MCRD Parris Island, SC in October of 1992 and was assigned to the School of Infantry-East where he was subsequently trained as a 0331, Machine Gunner. In January 1993, Sergeant Major Griffith was assigned to 2nd Battalion 2nd Marines, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he deployed to Okinawa, Japan from December 1993 through June 1994 and then redeployed to Haiti in support of Operation Uphold Democracy until October 1994. Sergeant Major Griffith later deployed with the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit from January through July 1996 serving as a Scout Sniper Team Leader during Operation Assured Response in Monrovia, Liberia.
From September 1996 through June 2001, Sergeant Major Griffith was assigned to MCRD Parris Island, South Carolina where he served as the G-3 Operations Chief and later as a Drill Instructor, Senior Drill Instructor and Close Combat Instructor. From July 2001 through July 2004 he served within 2nd Battalion 6th Marines and deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF), Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and to Okinawa, Japan.
From July 2004 through April 2007, Sergeant Major Griffith served as a Drill Instructor training Naval Officers at Officers Training Command Pensacola, Florida. In April 2007, he was ordered to 1st Battalion 7th Marines where he deployed in support of OIF in 2007 and again in 2009. In September 2009 he was assigned to 2D Marine Raider Battalion and deployed in support of OEF during 2010. Shortly after his return he was selected to his current rank and assigned to 3D Marine Raider Battalion.
Upon completion of his tour with MARSOC, Sergeant Major Griffith was assigned to Combat Logistics Battalion 6 and deployed in support of OEF in 2013. In March 2014 he was assigned to 2nd Intelligence Battalion until October 2015 when he assumed the duties as the 22nd Marine Expeditionary Unit Sergeant Major.
From June 2016 through December 2016 he was deployed as the MEU Sergeant Major in support of Operation Odyssey Lightening. In April 2017 he was tasked with serving as the Sergeant Major for the Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force – Crisis Response - Africa and was forward deployed from September 2017 through March 2018. In April of 2018 he assumed his current position as the Sergeant Major of New River Air Station.
SgtMaj Griffith’s personal awards include the Bronze Star Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device, Meritorious Service Medal (2nd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat Distinguishing Device (3rd Award), Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3rd Award), Combat Action Ribbon (2nd Award), and the Navy / Marine Corps Parachutist Insignia.
