H&HS provides general administration, training, welfare, morale, and discipline of assigned personnel. H&HS is responsible for the operations of two UC-12 Huron aircraft flown in support of (ISO) OSA operations and to execute JOSAC support requests ISO United States Transportation Command as well as OSA direct support of Headquarters Marine Corps. The Marines, sailors, and civilians of H&HS make up the backbone of the air station’s daily operations by providing fuel, aircraft firefighting and rescue personnel, air traffic control, and other necessary support personnel needed to run an Air Station.

H&HS Lineage:

  • H&HS was activated 1 October 1951 as Headquarters Squadron, Marine Corps Air Facility (MCAF), Camp Lejeune, NC.
  • Redesignated 22 July 1952 as Headquarters Squadron, MCAF, New River, Jacksonville, NC.
  • Redesignated 23 October 1954 as Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron (H&HS), MCAF, New River, Jacksonville, NC.
  • Redesignated 1 September 1968 as H&HS, MCAS (Helicopter) New River, Jacksonville, NC.
  • Redesignated 1 June 1985 as H&HS, MCAS New River, Jacksonville, NC.

During this period H&HS supported Marines deploying to Korea, Lebanon, Grenada, Panama, Liberia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Iraq. Additionally, H&HS provided direct support for the Marine Forces Command site visit to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Weapons and Tactics Instructor course; Integrated Training Exercise, Marine Corps Combat Conditioning Exercise, and RAVEN Exercise; and provided disaster relief for Puerto Rico in the wake of Hurricane Maria and for North Carolina in the wake of Hurricane Florence.

  • Insignia: Originally approved in 1968 and updated in 1969.
  • The instruments and control tower portrayed in the insignia symbolize the mission of support and services which are the principal areas of operation.

NOTES WORTH MENTIONING:

  • Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron: In 1951, the overall Facility command fell under the Marine Corps Air Bases, Eastern Area, with headquarters at Cherry Point.
  • H&HS was the only Corps unit organic to the Facility itself.
  • The first “Headquarters” contains the commanding officer’s staff and special sections and is concerned primarily with facility operations.
  • The second “Headquarters” is purely administrative, handling personnel records, etcetera of the Marines attached to the facility.
  • UC-12: H&HS assumed Reporting Custodian control over two UC-12B Huron aircraft on 2 December 2008.
    • UC-12B Bureau Number 161500.
    • UC-12B Bureau Number 161513.
  • May 2021: MCAS New River became a pure “whiskey” squadron.

AS-840 C-12 Hangar: The C-12 hangar is the oldest hangar and building aboard the Air Station. It was constructed in Haiti in 1921 and later moved to Parris Island in January 1934. It was again dismantled, moved, and reassembled on 1 July 1952 in an old airfield area across the taxiway from the previous location of the 1942 nose hangar and designated AS-840. There it remains today, not only the oldest hangar but the oldest structure aboard the air station and all of Camp Lejeune, under its popular name as the “King Air Hangar,” and reposes as a quiet veteran of Marine Corps history.
