Throughout the week, Marine Corps Base (MCB) Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River personnel participated in their annual destructive weather exercises to prepare for the Atlantic Hurricane Season, running from June 1 to November 30. Hurricanes and other destructive weather events can pose a significant threat to both installations and personnel.During an emergency, both installations activate their Emergency Operations Centers (EOC), enabling key leaders to coordinate the strategic deployment of resources and staff. Senior leaders from Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base (MCIEAST-MCB) Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) New River participated in the annual State of the Community luncheon, hosted by the Jacksonville Onslow Chamber of Commerce. American alligators are part of the natural fauna in the coastal region of North Carolina, inhabiting freshwater bay lakes, rivers, creeks, marshes, swamps, and ponds. While the largest populations of alligators are found in Brunswick, New Hanover, Craven, Onslow and Pender counties, local populations are distributed in patches along the entire North Carolina coast. Onslow Beach serves as a migration stopover and nesting area for several rare species of shorebirds.Piping plovers and red knots, both threatened species, American oystercatchers and least terns, both species of concern, are a few of the shorebirds that use Onslow Beach on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune.Here are ways you can help shorebirds while enjoying the beach: Stay out of posted Shorebird Areas! Even if you do not see any birds, be sure to respect the posted shorebird areas and use designated walkways. Keep pets on a leash at all times! Per Base order, MCIEAST-MCB CAMLEJO 10570.2B, all pets are required to be on a leash no longer than 10 feet. Even well-behaved pets can be perceived as a threat to nesting birds. Take your trash with
