MCAS New River Commanding Officer
Colonel Thomas C. Farrington II

Colonel Farrington graduated from the University of Central Florida in August 2001, and was commissioned a 2ndLt in August 2002 through the Officer Candidates Course. He was designated a Naval Flight Officer in 2004 and completed initial F/A-18 training with VMFAT-101 at MCAS, Miramar, CA in 2005.

In October 2005, Col. Farrington was assigned to VMFA(AW)-242 aboard MCAS Miramar, CA as a F/A-18 Weapons and Sensors Officer where he completed an operational combat deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom 05-07 from July 2006 – Mar 2007.  From Apr 2008 until Oct 2010, he remained assigned with VMFA(AW)-242 when the squadron permanently relocated from MCAS Miramar, CA to MCAS Iwakuni, Japan.  While assigned to VMFA(AW)-242, he filled the billets of S-6 OIC, Schedule Writer, Flight Officer, Quality Assurance Officer, Training Officer, and deployed for 9-months as an individual augmentee to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait.

In August 2010, Col. Farrington was selected for transition from Naval Flight Officer to Naval Aviator and received his pilot wings in 2012.  After completing F/A-18 pilot training with VMFAT-101 he was assigned to the Vikings of VMFA(AW)-225 aboard MCAS Miramar from 2014-2016 where he served as the Academic OIC and S-1 OIC, and completed one deployment to MCAS Iwakuni in support of the Unit Deployment Program.  In March 2016, he reported to MAG-11 where he served as the MAG-11 Operations Officer and F/A-18 Naval Aviation Enterprise (NAE) Action Officer.

In August 2017, Col. Farrington received the UAS Officer MOS.  From 2017-2019, he was assigned to the VMU-2 “Night Owls” aboard MCAS Cherry Point, NC where he served  as the Director of Safety and Standardization and as the Operations Officer.

In August 2019, Col. Farrington was assigned to the 2d Marine Aircraft Wing headquartered at Cherry Point, NC and served as the G3 Future Operations Officer.

In June 2020, Col. Farrington served as the Commanding Officer of the VMU-3 “Phantoms” aboard Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay where the squadron deployed multiple detachments in support of 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit and Marine Rotational Force - Darwin.

In July 2022, Col. Farrington attended the U.S. Naval War College in Newport, RI where he completed Top Level Professional Military Education.

In July 2023, Col. Farrington was assigned to Special Operations Command Pacific (SOCPAC) aboard Camp Smith, HI.  While assigned to SOCPAC, Col. Farrington served one year as the Chief of Plans in the J5 directorate and one year as the SOCPAC Chief of Staff.

In July 2025, Col. Farrington assumed his current position as the Commanding Officer, Marine Corps Air Station, New River.

Col. Farrington is a graduate of the Navy Fighter Weapons School (TOPGUN), the MAWTS-1 Weapons and Tactics Instructor Course (WTI), and holds a Master of Arts in National Security and Strategic Studies (with distinction) from the U.S. Naval War College.  His personal awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with Strike Flight Number (6), and the Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of second and third award.
