MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. -- Camp Lejeune officials will temporarily close Onslow Beach to recreational users and non-essential personnel beginning 12 p.m., Tuesday, August 19, due to dangerous rip currents, high surf, and other anticipated weather effects from Hurricane Erin.
The closure, which includes blocking access to the Onslow Beach Bridge, will remain in effect until after Hurricane Erin passes offshore, seas have settled, damage has been assessed, and any hazards mitigated. Marine Corps Community Services (MCCS) has notified Onslow Beach residents and patrons that all evacuations must be completed prior to the closure.
The National Weather Service has issued a High Surf Advisory predicting wave heights between 6–12 feet along the Onslow County coastline. These conditions pose a significant risk to public safety and may cause beach erosion or damage to facilities.
Although Hurricane Erin is expected to remain offshore and not directly impact the installation, Camp Lejeune may experience fringe effects of wind and rain through Thursday.
Base officials will continue to monitor conditions and provide updates to the community regarding reopening.
