MARINE CORPS AIR STATION NEW RIVER, N.C. -- Marines from Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron aboard Marine Corps Air Station New River participated in a Commander’s Cup soccer tournament, Sept. 27.
The Commander’s Cup events are held as a Marine Corps Ball fundraiser for the H&HS Marines to lower the price of their ball tickets.
There were a total of eight teams participating in the tournament, said Lance Cpl. Hassam Paul, Installation Personnel Administration Center (IPAC) personnel clerk and tournament organizer.
Each match was divided into two 10-minute halves and the field length was shortened to 60 yards goal to goal.
“We also altered the rules of soccer slightly, such as slide-tackles not being permitted,” said Paul. “We did this to ensure a competitive yet safe environment for the Marines to participate in.”
With the tournament nearing its end, only the teams from Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) and IPAC remained to play in the final match.
“The first attempt of the final match ended in a draw with a score of 2-2,” said Paul. “The teams then went into a penalty shootout to determine the winner, which was ARFF with a final score of 2-1.”
The soccer tournament was the final Commander’s Cup event. After all points from all events were tallied, the overall prize was awarded to ARFF, who took the total prize of $400 to use toward ball tickets.
