Lejeune Memorial Gardens keep history alive

Jacksonville, N.C. - The Beirut Memorial in the Lejeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville, N.C., memorialize the 241 Marines, Sailors and Soldiers lost in the Oct. 23, 1983 attack on the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment Headquarters building. Also inscribed are the names of those who later died from their injuries as well as the names of three Marine pilots who were killed in Grenada. The names of the 273 service members are engraved next to the words, 'THEY CAME IN PEACE.'
